~Their Eyes Were Watching God~

Awesome and Amazing!!! This movie was so power and so touching. Janie Starks was an incredible woman who kept silent for 20 years. She was married to the mayor, Joe Starks, and their relationship was very rocky. Joe wanted control over Janie and everything that she did. Joe Starks took the word submissive very serious. She did everything from helping run a store to cooking for him and carrying it to the store for him. When Janie finally stood up for herself, Joe could not handle it. Joe had insulted Janie and as a comeback she said, “You talk a lot of brass, Joe, but there here's nothin' big about you but your voice! Hell, when you pull down yo' britches it look like you done hit the change of life!” That really fired Joe because he ran out the door and hit her in front of everybody. That just goes to show that she had had enough of Joe’s mess. She went to stay with a friend up until Joe’s death. Even while he was dying, he still treated Janie so badly. She told him that he was dying with her being obedient to him instead of letting her love him. To me, it seems as if she was treated more like his child instead of his wife. This man was so heartless that he told her that he hope thunder and lightning kill her. If that wasn’t cruel I don’t know what is.

Throughout the movie, Janie keeps saying, “There's two things everybody got to find out for they selves: they got to find out about love, and they got to find out about living.” Janie met Teacake and they hit it off very well. Teacake introduces her to things that she had never had. He taught her how to love and how to just live. Everyone thought that he was just going to take her money and run off. Although he did take her money and she didn’t know where he was, he still came back to be with her. Teacake loved Janie and Janie loved Teacake. They had what some of us would say “true love” or “real love”. Teacake was actually younger than Janie. This caused a problem to start, but later it didn’t matter. It is amazing how we, as people, look over something good because of the age difference. There is someone out there for everybody.  I have always thought that everyone that comes into your life comes to teach you something. Teacake loved Janie up until his death. It is sad because she had to kill the man that she truly loved. A dog had bitten Teacake and the dog had rabies. The rabies had caused Teacake to go mad. Teacake proved everyone wrong because he not only loved Janie, but he was in love with her. In today’s society, black women sometimes look over the good men because of their age or because they don’t have the same things that they have. At the same time, black men look over good women because they think black women are too outspoken, too loud, too much attitude, and etc. We are missing “true love” these days. It seems like no one wants anything real anymore. What I took from this movie was that Janie wasn’t afraid to be different. So many times we conform to what others think or what others want us to do. We put down our own happiness and our own living just to make someone else happy. For so long, Janie did the same thing that many of us do today. She was alive and well, but yet she wasn’t living. Although death is a terrible thing, the best thing that could have happened to her was the death of her first husband. She started to live shortly after his death. It is amazing that it takes death to make a person realize what they are truly worth and it takes a good man to show them what true love is. So often in the black community, we degrade each other. When one starts to come up and try to have a better life, others are degrading them for trying to do anything. They are called everything, but a child of God. They are gossiped about all over the town just because they want to be a success. We see this in almost every black community. We also seen this in Their Eyes Were Watching God, how they all talked about Janie for running off with Teacake. When we, as people, come to understand that everyone has a life to live and nobody can live someone else’s life, then the world will be a better place. I really enjoyed “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and would encourage others to watch it to.
